The Second National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals lists a number of chemicals in this class. They are linked together because they may share one mechanism by which they cause adverse health effects, and because they have some similarities in chemical structure, but their industrial uses are different. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and Polychlorinated dibenzo furans (PCDFs) are unintentional byproducts of a variety of industrial processes and of incineration of materials containing chlorine, such as PVC plastic. Coplanar Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) were manufactured for use primarily as insulating liquid in electrical equipment, such as transformers.
