Project Description

Geographical Coverage: 300-square-mile Elizabeth River watershed

Project Purpose: To form a partnership among the communities and all who earn their living from the river, to raise appreciation of its economic, ecological and recreational importance, and to restore the Elizabeth River system to the highest practical level of environmental quality.

Ranking Process: The program has three distinct phases:

Phase 1 - Assessment and ranking of risks
Phase 2 - Risk management
Phase 3 - Implementation of action plans

The ranking took place during Phase 1. During this phase, the Technical Report Committee assisted the Citizen/Industry, Government/Agency, and Science/Technical committees draft technical reports for each environmental issue. The three committees next integrated public input from two "Public Listening Sessions" with the technical reports and constructed Consensus Risk Rankings.

Project Participants: General Public
Governmental Agencies
Private Sector/Industry
Public Interest/Nonprofit Organizations
Scientific/Academic Community

All of the above stakeholder groups had representatives on the Citizen/Industry Committee, the Government/Agency Committee, or the Science/Technical Committee.
