  • Site Description
    Stage of Clean-up: Construction Completed

    Conditions at listing (December 1982): Barceloneta Landfill accepts industrial wastes on a 20-acre site in Florida Afuera, Puerto Rico. The wastes are placed in sinkholes, some of which are 100 feet deep. There is no natural or artificial barrier to prevent migration of contamination. Ground water is used for municipal drinking water. Status (July 1983): Later in 1983, EPA plans to start a Remedial Action Master Plan outlining the investigations needed to determine the full extent of cleanup required at the site. It will guide further actions at the site.

  • Threats and Contaminants
    The onsite sampling of groundwater has identified various HEAVY METALS and VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (VOCS). The area of the site is also a breeding ground for the Puerto Rican boa, designated as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
